child head banging

My 4-year old son has been banging his head at night since he was 6-months old. Can anyone help me understand why he does this? He usually does it just before he wakes up. His pediatrian has never heard of this before, and no doctor's in the Detroit, MI area specialize in chidren's sleep disorders.
