I struggled for 2 1/2 yrs to get a decent nights sleep and finally BEGGED my family dr. to help me, after trying relaxation tapes, stopping caffeine, etc all the tricks I could find/ think of and read about. Nothing helped. It was common to lay in bed 3-4 hrs before falling asleep and wake up exhausted a couple hrs later and have to go to work. Anyhow, my dr. prescribed Ambien for me finally after trying a few other milder sleep aids (Halcion made me hallucinate, really awfull) and now the ONLY way I get 5-8 hr of restfull sleep is to take the Ambien 15-30 min before I go to bed, have the TV on (it distracts me while I fall asleep and I don't lay there and mull over the day at work, etc). I have had about 10 nights in the last 3 yrs when the Ambien did't put me to sleep. Maybe if you have your dr prescribe it for short-term use (7 to10 days) while you try other sleep techniques or figure out whats causing the problem, you will at least be rested and can think w/ a clear head. Good luck to you.
