pick your insurance carefully

Posted by Jeff on January 22, 1998 at 07:06:59:

Hi all,

Just a heads up for those of you who have not been diagnosed with a sleep disorder yet. The insurance you carry can make a huge difference in the treatment you receive and your out-of-pocket expenses. Make your selection based more on coverages than on monthly premiums. Once diagnosed, you are stuck.

About 3 years ago, I dropped my insurance and was added to my wife's PPO in order to save about $40/month. Oh, if I had that choice to make again! The nearest doctor's office, or any facility that is covered, is 45 miles away. My primary care physician will not return my calls. I have left 3 phone messages and faxed a letter to his office in the last 14 days - no response. In June of '96, I was diagnosed with severe apnea. No follow up tests were ordered, in fact, it's amazing how little has been done for me. Of the few things that were, the insurance company with regularity disallows coverage. Now I'm stuck. I can not change companies as this is considered a "preexisting condition" and I will receive zero coverage for it if I switch.

Choose your insurance company carefully! It does make a difference.

Jeff
