Can a hyperthyroid cause insomnia ?

Posted by Peter Berkey on January 22, 1998 at 19:27:59:

I need to find out why I am experiencing sleeplessness for the last 3 weeks. My condition is not caused by stress or depression. I am not at all stressed or depressed in any way. I have not done anything to cause this.... no change in diet... no change in life style..... no changes at all. I am simply over-energised (the bionic man). I went up cross-country skiing last weekend and went up the most difficult trails on Mt Hood here in Oregon.. non-stop... without feeling tired or having to rest. I went all day without stopping.... I did not feel the least bit tired. I slept only 5 hours that night.... and the next morning I still felt energised. I cannot slow this body down! I then went bicycling for a full day.... I went up steep trails I could not normally go up... I spend every morning when I wake (at 4 AM) on my NordicTrac trying to burn off the excess energy. During the day, I am completely wired and my brain is stuck in over-drive.... I am able to remember details very well.... no grogginess at all !! Brain is perfectly in tune.

I talked to my mom the other day about this and she mentioned a problem that runs in the family. We have a history of thyroid problems. My mom suffers from the condition that slows her down. My grandmother suffered from the type that speeds you up... a "toxic thyroid" or "hyperthyroidism" (she was really wired all the time). I am wondering if this would be the cause of my sleeplessness. My mother thought she had seen what looked to be a "goiter" in my neck when I was younger (early twenties)... this is, of course, an indication of hyperthyroidism... but it went away on it's own. I have never had this type of sleeplessness before. I am 38 years old.

At this point, I am not insured, so I have to wait a couple weeks to be tested.

Any comments or suggestions?
