First the background. I've been on BiPAP for about five years. Since the start I had improved to where at the end of 1996 I was only sleeping
6.5 hours a night and feeling great. Early in 1997 I started sleeping longer and feeling more fatigued during the day. I also started gaining
weight. It got to the point where I needed 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night. During this time the sleep doc had no ideas except the typical reaction that I must be eating too much. Then a blood test in 10/97 found a high level of blood glucose. Since the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes I have changed my diet and have my blood sugar down into the normal range (average 107mg/dl or 5.9mmol/l for the past week). My sleep requirements are down to eight or nine hours.
My doctors supported a short term medical disability leave to get both condition under control. I applied for the leave two months ago and I'll be starting back to work on Monday. Now the question. I just heard today that the insurance company turned down my disability claim,
in part based on a copy of my sleep studies from 1993. Through empirical data on myself I found I started sleeping better as soon as my blood glucose got into/near the normal range. In fact, the one day this year that my fasting bg was higher than usual (136 or 7.5) I slept poorly the night before. Does anybody know of any papers or research on the impact of diabetes on sleep? I will be researching this myself for an appeal, but any help will be appreciated. Thanks.BigAl
