collasped throat at night!

My sister sleeps sitting up because her throat collasps when she lies down. Her Dr. is suspecting a larynx problem. She is not a smoker and has never had this problem before. She is afraid to sleep because she is afraid she won't be able to breathe. Anyone have any ideas?
