It sounds like you have a sleep disorder. It could be sleep apnea due to the increased heart rate which occures at the end of an apnea. Other things can also cause a rapid heart rate so you need to be studied to find the cause. Also apnea can present itself as insomnia, causing awakenings and not being able to go back to sleep. I would get some insurance if possible and get tested. You may find a lab in your area that does home studies which can cost less. Until you can get a sleep study try to stay off your back while sleeping or try sleeping in a more upright position. Also there are two things you can try to see if you have sleep apnea. You can make an audio recording of you sleep and listen to what your breathing sounds like during the night. If is sounds labored, snoring with pauses, gasping sounds, etc. can be a sign of a sleep related breathing disorder. Another possibility is to do a video of yourself sleeping. Set is up so it is close enough for you to hear youself and see the movement of your chest and face.

The best thing is to talk to a sleep specialist as soon as possible. The cost of sleep studies in some clinics is not a huge sum so check out the centers in your area.
