Custom Mask Design

Posted by Al Gavenas on November 12, 1997 at 00:04:23:

I have been using a nasal pillow holder of my own design for over a year. Instead of the hose comming off from the top of the head like the comercially made holder, my hose uses a swivel at the nose made from a pvc right angle pipe fitting.

I now am in phase two of my design and want to instead make a custom Silicon Rubber nasal mask. What I need is some way to make a very accurate impression of my nose that I could then use to make a mold and a model of my nose.

Remember that the nose has a lot of soft tissue and I do not want to push things out of shape. I sort of had in mind some way of painting something on the nose then backing it up with a stiffener of some sort to make the impression. Maybe some sort of dental impression material would work. I need a source for this material in the SAN JOSE, California area.

Once I get an accurate model of the nose, I know how to take over from their and I can do the rest of the design. Any and all help in getting a source of material and ideas as to how to get a very accurate impressiion of the nose will be sincerely and deeply appreciated.

I think the CPAP machine idea is great and works fine but I hope to ROLL MY OWN when it comes to the getting the air into the nose. The Idea that the comercial mfgs. can make one size or several sizes to fit all JUST DOESN'T WORK.

Also, instead of using headgear to hold the device against the nose, I use Soft Velcro straps over the ears to hold the device anainst the nose.

Whoever thought up the headgear and face mask idea did not have to sleep with it night after night. That is why I decided to Roll My Own.
