Posted by Jane on November 18, 1997 at 18:21:55:As a longtime (15 yr) nightshift worker I have developed a curiosity about how other shiftworkers cope. All the advice I read says to maintain a regular schedule, etc, but I don't know anyone who does. I sleep at night on my days off, even if I slept when I got home in the morning [catching up]. Then I get up early, move around for a while, and if nothing is going on I stay in a half awake stage until afternoon, when I get alert about my usual time or a little earlier. On workdays I often have trouble getting to sleep due to thinking about what I should have done or ought to do. I find that listening to recordings of radio shows (entertainment, NOT news or controversy) or a book on tape that I like but heard before keeps my mind occupied just enough and blocks out household noises so I can fall asleep. Sometimes I sleep as soon as I get home and sometimes I don't go to bed until after noon- the flexability is why I started working nights in the first place, and why I prefer it.
