Sleep/awake theory?

Posted by D. Scott on November 21, 1997 at 11:12:08:

I heard once a long time ago that the human body is at its best two hours after waking up. I've heard since then several other figures.

The problem here is this: I am a varsity athlete, and my coach insists that the team be up four hours before competition begins. As a result, I end up getting up very early on weekend mornings, a time I usually use to make up sleep from those late-night Physics sessions during the week. I'm concerned that lack of sleep is affecting my performance. Does anybody know of any studies reflecting either

1) Effects of sleep deprivation on performance (athletic/academic or otherwise)

or

2) The amount of time after one wakes up that they can expect to be at "optimum" performance...

Thanks for your time; sorry for the long post...
