Waking up gasping for air is a classic symptom of sleep apnea. Also sleep apnea can trigger sleep walking. Sleep walking occurs during deep sleep (slow wave sleep) and if you are aroused during that time it is difficult to wake up if at all and if you have a tendency to sleep walk it may happen. It takes some time after falling asleep to go into deep sleep (45min. - 1hr). If the arousal occurs before deep sleep you will wake up easily. These periods of sleep apnea usually do not wake a person up completely, just causing a brief arousal to breath and you wake up not remembering the arousal and feeling non refreshed. So bottom line is to go to a sleep clinic and be evaluated for a sleep study. You will be happy you did. Treating this disorder will probably eliminate the sleep walking or at least it will be a rare occurrence.
