Afraid of Not Waking

Posted by Michelle on January 29, 1998 at 08:27:36:

Hi, I just found this site and am happy to find others with some of my feelings. I'm new here and am looking for any help, information or compassion from someone who knows what I'm feeling.
I've been experiencing alot of problems (including sleep) over the past two years. First, I started sleeping very heavily (after being a light sleeper all my life)and feeling terrible in the a.m. Then it started getting worse, my husband couldn't wake me in the a.m. (he said I seemed like I was in a coma) and my joints were all sore and I felt puffy (like swollen) all over. They tested me for many things. I've had some serious apnea episodes (three in which I felt like someone had been holding a pillow over my head and bolted upright from a sound sleep to gasp for air), am tired all the time, feel short of breath alot, get episodes of dizzyness, vertigo, my eyes jump from side to side and I see very vivid imagaes when I lay down and am trying to go to sleep. My legs hurt most of the time, feel stiff and feel like there is no circulation. I get these hot feelings (or hot spots) in different places on my legs. It's a burning sensation and if I touch I can feel the heat but it doesn't turn red or swell. I was tested for Sjogren's syndrome - negative (thankfully) but was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Sicca Complex (dry eyes and mouth). My neurologist sent me to the sleep dr. Went on Monday, and he has scheduled me for a full 2 day sleep study in the beginning of March. He said it sounds like I definately have apnea, possibly cataplexy, narcolepsy and some type of hallucinations. I am petrified to go to sleep from now until the study. Can you just stop breathing (and not start back up again) during an apnea attack. I'm afraid I won't wake up. If anyone has any thoughts or feedback, I would greatly appreciate it. There are so many symptoms happening, my general m.d. looks at me like I'm not all there. All I want is to feel better and know how to get there. I'm 37 (feel more like 87) and have two small children and work full time. Help please. Thanks.
