Hi Donald,
I have a few things for you to look at. For a reasonable writeup on what is involved with connecting an AC-only CPAP unit to a battery, take a look at
http://www.newtechpub.com/phantom/psnews/power01.htm
The discussion gets a tad technical, but you can get the gist of what is involved. After reading this, you may decide to call the manufacturer of your CPAP machine and see what they have to say about powering their equipment from batteries. This is a common question, though they don't always have good answers.
For an interesting report from one person on using solar power for CPAP, see
http://www.newtechpub.com/phantom/faq/osa_faq.htm#camping
Note that some CPAP units are designed for operating from either AC or batteries. For example, see
http://www.respironics.com/interactive/main-sleep.html
Click on sleep apnea therapy bubble and the Solo(TM) product family. There are other manufacturers who make similar products.
Just remember there is hope. I know of one fisherman who goes for a week at a time out in the wilderness (Boundary Waters Canoe Area). He brings a 20 pound battery with him. The battery only has about 20 hours of power in it. He uses the CPAP machine for 3 hours each night. He sleeps the rest of the night without the machine. He finds this refreshing enough that he can go the whole week without too much trouble.
For more information on the use of CPAP for part of a night, see

This is part of Kerrin White's excellent web site on sleep apnea.
Good Luck!
