Sleep apnea or my imagination

Posted by Tom Tucker on February 01, 1998 at 00:20:00:

I told my doctor(HMO)I thought I had sleep apnea. I told him sometimes I dream I am running or swimming and that I can't breathe -- then I wake up gasping for air with my heart pounding. I snore so loud I wake myself up sometimes. I am tired all day and have to drink coffee all day to stay awake. I am 51 yrs old, considerably overweight and am on high blood pressure medication. I seem lethargic all the time with very little energy.

The doctor, upon hearing the above, told me to try using breath-rite strips and prescribed Rhinocort (a nasal inhaler--budesonide). He told me I didn't need to have sleep therapy, but to come back and discuss it if the above didn't help. The above 2 items did seem to help somewhat, but I still have all the same problems, maybe only 75% of what they were before. How serious is this? Do I probably have sleep apnea? If so, how can I get my doctor to authorize the proper tests and treatment?
