Science Fiction Sleep Machine?

Friends,

For years now I have been reading about a machine that will allow you to be fully rested on just one or two hours of sleep. Unfortunately, most, if not all of this reading has been in Science Fiction stories. Does anyone know of any reality to something like this?

It was often presented as a "real" machine. Supposedly it worked by imposing the brain patterns of a deeply sleeping person on your normal sleep pattern (via some electrodes and all).

Just wondering (and thinking it would be a neat idea!).
