OSA & tracheostomy

Posted by Carolyn on February 07, 1998 at 09:24:59:

I am seeking information for an article I am doing on tracheostomy for obstructive sleep apnea. Pros and cons from a patients & physicians point of view.I am looking for details.

I have severe obstructive sleep apnea and live with a trach. I have found it to be easy to live with and 100% effective for OSA. In reading different forums and in talking to patients and physicians there is a negative view of the subject. Patients that don't have one really don't know much about it and most of what they do know is not correct. Certainly a trach is not the answer for most people, however for people who have severe OSA and are not CPAP compatible and are not candidates for other surgery or dental compliance trachs are the last alternative. Unfortunately a lot of patients refuse a tracheostomy and choose to do nothing about OSA.Therefore putting themselves at risk for strokes or possible death.

Any input would be appreciated. If anyone has any questions about trachs I will be glad to respond by e-mail.
