I used to have the same problem. Although I had been diagnosed with narcolepsy and was being treated for it, a sleep study revealed I also had nocturnal myoclonus: everytime my brain went into sleep a muscle in my leg caused my foot to twitch or jerk, which would wake me up. It also kept me from getting hardly any stage 3 and no stage 4 sleep. This worsened my daytime sleepiness. I was very surprised at the results and had not been aware this was happening or related it to my disrupted sleep. Fortunately, if this is your problem there are a number of medications a doctor can prescribe that will help you sleep continuously, or maybe wake up only once or so a night. But there might be other causes for your difficulties; you should try to see a sleep specialist.
