Current research on the circadian rythms of adolescents indicates that natural patterns tend to be "late to bed, late to rise;" that for timing teaching to coincide with optimal wakefulness and cognitive function of teenagers, schools need to adjust their hours later, rather than earlier.
Perhaps the long abused "ten o'clock scholar," was just going with the natural flow of his biorhythms, after all.
