Sleep apnea can cause you to wake up gasping, but my understanding is that it generally clears up quickly, i.e. in a few breaths after you open up your airway. If you felt like there was a huge weight on your chest keeping you from being able to get air in, it ****might be**** a symptom of heart trouble. I am not here to make a diagnosis, etc, -- read the disclaimer with this site. Just a suggestion that you might want to see your doctor and ask for an EKG.
