Hi Pat,

I find that an ordinary 16" floor fan with a three-way switch makes a very satisfactory white-noise generator. I use it in the bedroom while I sleep days (after doing all-night sleep studies), and always use one set on "low" if my family is about the house during my sleep time.
You should be able to find one at any discount department store.
