mathematics of sleep apnea

During my initial visit with my sleep doc, she mentioned that there exists a "fourth power relationship" of some sort between the airway and breathing exertion (or something like that). At that time, I was so tired that I wasn't listening closely. Now that I have been successfully treated with a dental appliance, I would like more information on the mathematics of sleep apnea. Can anyone direct me to where I can get more information?
