I think your instincts on this are very good. The symptoms which you describe suggest strongly that your husband should be evaluated for his sleep apnea, which is likely to be very much at the core of his deteriorating health status.
Many who suffer breathing disordered sleep do not fit the usual profile (male, obese, over 45), but suffer sleep apnea nevertheless.
Sleep apnea is insidious, and can wreak havoc on an individual's health if untreated.
Yes, inform the cardiologist and your primary physician, and seek the counsel of a physician who specializes in sleep medicine, the sooner the better.
