Robert:

REM sleep is as distinctive from Non REM sleep as it is from wakefulness. It is considered by some authors to be a third state of being with its' own neurophysiological processes. One of these processes is dreaming. The other is a reversable loss of muscle tone that takes place during this state. The theory behind this paralysis is that it prevents people from acting out their dreams.

When this inhibition of muscle tone does not occur during REM sleep the phenomena is called REM behavior sleep disorder. It is a scientifically proven and experimentally demonstrated sleep disorder.

It can be dangerous to you and others around you.

Since effective and safe treatment is available, a precise diagnosis is critical. You should consult a physician who specializes in sleep disorders.
