Trazodone, Bad reaction? HELP!!!

I was prescribed Trazodone well over a year ago to off set the side effects(insomnia) of the anti-depressant I am using(effexor). Started to experience problems in the last 2 mths. I was using 1/4-1/2 of 50mg. when I needed it. Then before Christmas, Started having to take a whole pill to get any effect. Also previously, it would only take 20-30 mins to fall asleep. Now it takes 2-3 hours, and then I only sleep 2-3 hours. AND I am sleepy all day.

I suspected I might have developed a tolerance, or an adverse reaction, as I have had this problem before with other drugs or herbal remidies (I had a terrible reaction to Valerian!) So two days ago, I threw out the last of my script. Now I get to sleep around 4:00 a.m. Wake up after 2-3 hours. During the day I am still sleepy, and will get to the point where I cannot stay awake. But then again, If I nap, I will only sleep an hour or so.

So, I am trying not to nap, avoiding sugar, caffine, etc. I am hoping that eventually I'll return to normal. I have had insomnia, on and off for years, but have attributed it to stress, as I can sleep at times. Although I have always woken up in the night.

Sorry this is soooo long! I get carried away. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
