Hi Archie,

Being by nature diurnal creatures (awake in the daytime, asleep at night), most humans find the reverse schedule to be problematic. Some can adjust, some can't, and most are somewhere inbetween.

I also work nights and sleep days, and have for years. I find the following help:

Set a regular schedule of bedtime/sleep time.
Eliminate naps as much as possible.
Create a sleep environment that is free of interruption, so that you feel confident that no one will wake you unnecessarily (disconnect the phone).
Darken the bedroom.
Use ear plugs if necessary to shut out outside noise.
Use a fan or some such device to cover outside noise with white noise.
Eliminate caffeine or other stimulants from your diet.
Exercise daily.
Develop a relaxation "exercise."

Consider also that your sleep may be disturbed for other reasons as well. You can further inform yourself about your sleep by taking any of the self tests offered in the Sleep Links at the top of the Sleep Forum page, and/or consult with a physician who specializes in sleep medicine.

Disordered sleep is a much more pervasive problem than most people, including physicians, realize, only in recent years being recognised as a national health problem of major proportions. Much new information is available, and treatment for sleep disorders as well, so keep searching.

Best of luck,

Brian
