Posted by Gary Ball-Kilbourne on March 11, 1998 at 21:20:07:After an unsuccessful attempt at using a CPAP for my sleep apnea, the ENT specialist I visited today recommended that I consider two surgeries: (1) to correct a dislocated septum; (2) a UPPP. The prospect of the first does not bother me; the second one is beginning to. I have been hearing (and reading forum posts) about UPPP--that it does not have a very good success rate; that it can cause changes and difficulties in one's voice (I'm a preacher); and that there is a likelihood of losing foods and beverages out one's nose. These factors, coupled with tales of weeks of residual pain, make me wonder whether UPPP is worth it, or whether I should just go on as I have been with sleep apnea. When I pressed the ENT for his recommendation, all he said was that he recommended that I "consider it" and to call him if I wanted to pursue surgery.
If you have had the UPPP surgery or if you are an experienced surgeon, please tell me what your experience is with whether UPPP is worth all its drawbacks. Thanks!
