When I got my machine and was still renting it during the trial period it came with a removeable self-contained HEPA filter placed between the machine and hose. When I bought the machine I requested some more of the filters. They look like two clear funnels placed wide ends together with the filter in the middle. I think they do a good job of filtering out the bed dust and mold spores. My house is dusty and I change them every 2-3 months. They cost about $3 each.
