Sleep apnea and smoking

Posted by Gina on March 15, 1998 at 11:01:18:

Hi!

I've just discovered this forum and am really impressed with all the helpful discussion.

Although it was never diagnosed, my father had sleep apnea until he was 60 years old. He would fall asleep in the middle of conversations, while playing cards, etc., etc.. At night he would have frequent choking spells and the snoring was unnerving.

During all those years we had never heard of sleep apnea and he had never discussed the problem with his doctor - too embarrassed. Dad quit smoking when he was 60 and about six months after he quit we realized that the sleep problems had gradually stopped as well!

He now sleeps normally and never falls asleep at inappropriate times. Can't begin to tell you what a change there has been in his life...and ours! And...quitting smoking was the only change in his life or lifestyle which could have stopped the sleep problems.

When I discovered an article about sleep apnea a few years age I immediately understood what his problem had been all those years. Couldn't help wondering whether anyone else had ever noticed a connection between smoking and sleep apnea.

Hope this helps someone else and would love to hear your comments.

Take care...

Gina
