Posted by Lori Weisel on March 17, 1998 at 00:54:44:First of all I want to thank everyone who gave me fast feedback, I really appreciate it. After spending about 2-3 hours reading these forums (1-3) and another site's last night, I felt better educated. First thing this morning I called the DME company and had a tech here this afternoon. (I'm still on Monday night the 16th even though it's after midnight) Since I was fitted for a size Petite (yeah, petite, can ya imagine that? It's probably the only time in my life I've been sized with anything in a "petite" - what can I say, at least my nose is small!!! Ha, ha) in the doctors office and the DME tech only had size small Gold Seal Mask, he felt some of the other masks available that do not have a wide range of sizes might be too large. (oh, relish the thought, "too big" ? I love it!!) Anyway, he suggested the nasal pillows. I was fitted, tried it out and think it's workable. Though the "vents" or "ports" or whatever they are called are noiser. My hubby says last night at one point he woke up, I was so quiet, he had to actually touch me to see if I was breathing. This is a huge change from before. I'm keeping the Gold Seal mask; the tech said I may want to have it as a back up. I'm also interested in the Phantom mask I've been reading about here and elsewhere.
The sleep disorder doc said he wanted to give me my life back, and believe me, I'm ready for it !! I feel very positive and optimistic about this all. Now that I look back, I believe I've had OSA for at least 10 years undiagnosed. No wonder all the anti-depressants I've taken over the years never really dealt effectively with my lethargy, lack of concentration, daytime sleepiness, extreme difficulty getting out of bed in the morning (or afternoon), forgetfulness (it really isn't early Alzheimer's Disease) or morning headaches. The depression usually lifted or became better but these other things were ever present. Now my psychiatrist says the pieces of the puzzle are fitting together. YES! At age 44 I'm not just "losing it" and simply getting older. I have a sleep disorder and am getting treatment. There is a light at the end of the tunnel afterall.
I'm sure I'll have more questions in time - but for now, my nasal pillows are calling me. Thanks everyone.Lori
