aaaaakkk! the water should always be changed every day, hot or cold. it is a primo breeding ground for bacteria, mold spores and other cretins.
as for cold humidifiers, I read some literature that they are useless, and contribute to sinus irritation equal to using no humidifier at all.
I was able to get the doctor who runs the sleep lab and prescribes the equipment to prescribe the heated humidifier and it was covered by the insurance. and the first unit I got failed within the first week (standard failure timing for electronics, either right away or not for a long time). When it failed, Apria cheerfully (??!??) replaced it. Actually, they were cheerful because they just sent the lemon back to the company, so they weren't out of pocket.
