The balloon method of diagnosing central sleep apnea is inserting an tube with a baloon on it into your esophagus through your nose. The balloon will measure pressure so if you are making an effort to breath it will be picked up. If you are not making an effort to breath then it is a central apnea. If you are making effort and no air is flowing then it is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
