I have the passover humidifier and found it useless, but my respirologist suggested I put a heating pad under it with a cake rack between the heating pad and humidifier. As for the water, I use water from a Britta Filter. The next day I give it a good cleaning and make sure it dries fully before setting it up for the next night. Also, once a week, I wash the humidifier with a strong vinegar solution. I was told the main reason for using distilled water was to prevent hard build-up inside the unit and these methods have worked 100%. I've been using this method for 8 months now and it's been fine.
I hope this helps. The heating pad and cake rack is cheaper than a heated unit.
