My respironics unit is designed to run on 12V; 110V is actually stepped down to 12V within the machine. Consequently, battery power is a real option. The only real question is around finding the lightest battery giving the longest life. Sounds like the fisherman has found a reasonable compromise. I would look at the availability of the smallest marine deep cycle battery. You want a deep cycle battery since they are designed for continual drain/recharge cycles. You might also want to look at not solar power per se but solar chargers. These are not terribly expensive and could possibly recharge a small battery after each nightly drain cycle. A good source of these devices are marine catalog suppliers. And a solar charger is quite light so shouldn't be much of a back pack burden (soft ones can roll-up even). Good luck, keep us posted.
