I agree with your comments. There are a number of solar chargers around that would do a good job. In fact, the reference I gave (http://www.newtechpub.com/phantom/faq/osa_faq.htm#camping) is about a man who uses two 5 W panels to charge a battery. Clearly, powering a CPAP unit directly from solar cells is of little use since most of us sleep at night.
Battery technology is an interesting area. I have read of some folks who prefer gel-cells because leakage problems are minimized. The energy density of gell-cells is not particularly good, however.
One problem is that most patients I have talked to are told what CPAP machine to get by their doctor. There are no options presented. There are enough different kinds of machines (CPAP, BiPAP, DPAP, AutoCPAP), power supply options, and battery technologies that patients really need some help on making smart choices.
