Boy did you hit the nail on the head. I would have done a number of things differently if I would have had more information on the front-end.

I had a rental phase on my CPAP unit, but it was only for a short time. If everyone had a "try before you buy" phase there would at least be a time window for people to become informed of the different types of machines on the market.

Somehow I don't think the insurance companies would be receptive to this. I wonder if any of the consumer rags have done any evaluation of the sleep apnea machines and treatments? At least it would be something to recommend folks to read.

It seems like there are different kinds of patients. I get a number of emails weekly from people who stop by my web site and ask if I have any info on brand X or brand Y machines. These people are usually having sleep problems (sleep fragmentation is the most common problem) and are thinking of changing from CPAP to BiPAP/DPAP/AutoCPAP. This group needs to talk with their doctor.

Another group of email comes from people who are in the middle of a two-night sleep study protocol and are trying to become better informed about the types of machines. They have been informed that they have OSA and want information on equipment. Here is a group that the Internet could serve well. They would be better informed consumers when they see their doctors. This group is always curious about dental appliances.

A third group of people have been on CPAP for a few months are are trying to figure out how to better integrate it into their lives. This includes getting batteries, humidifier, mouth strap, etc. This group has CPAP machines and needs to get specific accessories. The Internet could provide a useful service to these people as well.
