My wife had a tracheostomy done after CPAP didn't work well. The trach worked great but my wife's trachea didn't cooperate too well. Her trachea collapsed on the end of the tube blocking the airway on 3 separate occasions. So she had 2 helicopter rides and an ambulance ride and didn't remember any of them. Her surgeon is now considering a possible major surgery to rebuild he trachea and posibly solve the collapsing problem. My wife, by the way, was a 2 pack a day smoker for most of her adult life(she's now 45 and has been off them for 6 years). I'll give her this address so she can follow-up with some of her thoughts about the tracheostomy directly to you.
