I have had eerily similar symptons and diagnoses as yourself, including the alcohol-related effects. Unfortunately, I also bear the physical signs of ill-rest, and often after 10 hours of sleep am told that I look tired.

As I am loathe to take anti-depressants, I have found several nutritional factors which seem to improve my condition.

1. A reduction in carbohydrates, particularly sucrose and fructose, in my diet and a slight increase in protein consumption. Remarkably on very low-carbohydrate diets, I sleep and rise like a "normal" person.

2. A melatonin-based sleep aid prior to bedtime. (I don't ever seem to have problems sleeping, other than snoring, but this seems to improve alertness upon arising).

3. A combination of L-Tyrosine, DMAE and St. John's Wort/5-HTP. The basis for using these supplements stems from theory/belief that the bulk of rest is necessitated from mental rather than physical fatigue. The four supplements listed above provide neuro-stimulation through protagonist and antagonist mechanisms, the explanation of which goes beyond the scope of this message. Suffice it to say, these help tremendously.

4. Increased consumption of water, especially in conjunction with the consumption of any caffeinated products.

Although I am certain that many M.D.'s would openly criticize many of these suggestions, they have dramatically improved my condition. I still cannot get by on 6 hours sleep for more than a day or two, but 8 hours generally suffices.

I hope this helps you in some way; it heartened me to read your message and know that I am not alone.
