The problem with DC and an inverter is that it is yet another box and set of wires to screw with. Also, the inverter uses power, which shortens battery operating time between charges.

Understand that the specifications listed for the unit (120 VA) is for the maximum power used. The actual power a CPAP unit uses depends on your pressure setting (plus other electronic things like power factor). The higher the pressure, the more power used.

I will write Respironics an email and ask them if they could give me the real power usage of that unit as a function of pressure. We could then talk about the kind of inverter and battery you would need.

I will get back to you when I get more information. By the way, I see this type of question a lot.
