Posted by Jodi Napolitano on December 07, 1999 at 10:55:53:I am an early intervention nurse who does home visits with infants and families. One family in particular is having a very difficult time getting her 8 month old infant to sleep for more than 1 1/2 hours at a time during the night. We have tried many things including comforting him while he is in the crib, giving him a sip of water as opposed to formula, letting him cry for short periods to learn to calm himself, putting something in the crib with her scent on it, etc. The main problem with letting him cry it out is not only his young age, but also his past medical history. He was born with CHD and has had open heart surgery on two occasions. Medically he is doing well, with teething and fluid in his ears being his only present medical problems. (yes, he gets Motrin at night and the HOB is elevated). Still he wakes up one hour after being lied down and each hour after that until he is taken to bed with the overwhelmed mother at 3 a.m.
HELP--if you cannot, can you direct me to somewhere/one who can?
