Teenagers are interesting critters. As they go through puberty and their bodies change, so do their circadian rhythms. Where an adult becomes sleepy at 10pm, the teenager starts an hour later at 11pm. Teenagers need 8 hours or longer for sleep but try and convince them. Even if they "catch up" on the weekend, they will have trouble going to bed on Sunday night which starts the process all over again. There is actually legislation in Congress right now to change the school hours for high school to a later time to accomodate these sleep needs. One way to find out if your teenager is getting enough sleep is to see how he/she functions during the day...does he nap in class? Is he irritable? Does he have trouble concentrating or making decisions? If he says yes to these questions, he needs more sleep. Hope I've helped!
