Hey Paul. I am a sleep tech at a local hosp. here in Denver. Oximetry tests are a reasonable means of first-line testing for sleep apnea. Oxygen drops only occuring during part of night suggest that you may have either positional or REM related sleep apnea. However since an oximeter provides no other data (ie. body position, sleep patterns) it can not be used as a definitive diagnostic procedure but rather be suggestive of apnea. I would reccommend now getting an in-lab study.
