There is no substitute for a proper evaluation. If you really do have sleep apnea then it is something you will be living with for a long time, and that can be very serious for your health. Don't mess around.
Sleeping on your back is a good idea; losing 30+ pounds if you are overweight is a good idea; stopping alcohol and smoking also helps; clearing up your nose if you have a chronic stuffy nose helps.
If you've not had a sleep study then you can't be sure you have sleep apnea. If you don't have sleep apnea, then simpler therapy than CPAP might help. At the very least get your family doctor to do an overnight oxygen saturation recording. It won't rule out sleep apnea, but it will give you an idea if it is moderate to severe, and might move you to have a full evaluation.
If you do have sleep apnea CPAP and similar therapies are the best approach.
You could have a sleep study in Canada for about $US 400 each, and purchase a used CPAP system for about $US 3-500 each.
Let me say it again: don't mess with your health. DO it right. DO it now.
