A lot of questions...

Posted by Contralto on April 02, 1998 at 16:31:04:

Hello, all.
I am a music major who has had an unstable sleep situation for as long as I can remember, probably since age 5. It really is annoying, since it ends up taking up to 2-3 hours to wake up in the morning. Also, I am often very restless, and even though I might be tired, I know if I get into bed I will lie there restlessly. So I have tried using everything from music to reading to try to get rid of that factor...but I *still* have a problem getting to sleep. My mother told me the other day I needed to get consistent, but then even if I go to bed at a fairly consistent hour I don't really get to sleep due to the afore-mentioned restlessness.
Another problem I find is that when I do sleep, it is often either disjointed, interrupted, cluttered with chaotic dreaming, or any combination thereof. The only nights I am able to wake up out of and be functional soon after are the ones in which I have seemingly no dream-life. Is that a possible factor...somehow?
I am just trying to put it all together...to find what I need to do so that I'm with it in the morning, not taking short dozes during harmony that I don't know about untill I wake up, and I also just want to get to where getting up at 5:00 for an 8:00 class allows me to be functional by 7:00 and not merely by 10:30.
Also, just a curious question. Are there...like...levels of dreaming...like, for instance, I can be in a dream, but aware of the bed I am on, or aware aof my family in the other end of the house...yet still dreaming. (and sometimes the family's conversation will weave itself into the dream.) I was just curious.
