Grinding or Crunching teeth

Posted by Jeff Manfull on April 07, 1998 at 15:14:33:

I have two children [ages 5 & 12] who both grind their teeth at night periodically. It doesn't happen every night, but on the nights they do grind their teeth, it lasts a majority of the night. They make such a loud "crunching" noise that my wife and I wake up. The children appear restless and maybe a bit distressed while they are grinding, but otherwise they are sound asleep. They never remember the instances the next morning, nor can they reproduce the sound [at least volume-wise] when asked to purposely grind their teeth. It's very strange. I understand that this is clinically called "Nocturnal Bruxism", but I haven't found anything in the forums about it other than their are two types.

What I want to know is: What causes this?? Is it possibly heriditary? Are they having bad dreams? Is this a symptom of something worse? Is is sycosymatic? What can be done??
