Sleep and the Seasons

Posted by Sara Parsons on April 08, 1998 at 17:01:56:

I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia with its attendant sleep disorders (mainly alpha intrusion in delta sleep). I am still very, very tired. But my real question is this: does anyone know of any studies relating sleep (or lack thereof!) and the seasons? What I mean is I have been thinking that, in this industrialized world we no longer wake up or go to sleep with the sun (which would afford us much more sleep in winter, less in summer, etc.) Instead, we try to get up at 6:00am (or whatever) all year around! Could it be possible that this has led to an ongoing, yearly deterioration of our sleep? Isn't it possible that, just as our bodies require 8-10 hours of restoration (sleep!) every night that we also need a 3-4 month period every year (winter) for greater sleep and relaxation? I know that if I could just hibernate each winter I'd feel a lot better come spring time. Anyway, I just wonder if I'm the only one who has ever thought this and if it is crazy or could have some merit.
