Posted by Edie Country on April 10, 1998 at 23:45:56:My husband recently had a polysomnogram that showed 127
episodes of central sleep apnea during an 8 hour period,
plus 26 episodes of obstructive apnea, and 23 episodes of
hypoapnea. We are waiting for them to call us to come in
and have him fitted with a CPAP machine. What no one,
including the doctor, is able to tell us, is how sleep
apnea could cause him to have the laryngospasm episodes he has where he wakes up unable to breathe, talk or swallow
for up to 10 minutes after awakening. They also have him
on ranitidine at night just in case his laryngospasms are
also exacerbated by heartburn. Has anyone out there with sleep apnea experienced episodes like these once awake? Is
there anyone out there who can tell me the mechanics of how
sleep apnea could set off these spasms? How dangerous is
central sleep apnea? I can't find much on it...the info is
mostly on the more common obstructive sleep apnea.
