Hi Kirbi,

Excessive daytime sleepiness is a cardinal sign of disturbed sleep. Often sufferers of disturbed sleep are unaware that their sleep is disturbed, but have wake-time symptoms such as hypersomnolence, morning headache, depression, memory loss, irritability, etc.

You have correctly concluded that the best route toward a solution to this difficulty is to see a doctor. I recommend that you consult with a physician who specializes in sleep medicine. He/she may prescribe a sleep study (polysomnography) which will pin down your sleep disorder definitively, and prescribe appropriate treatment.

The consequences of disturbed sleep left untreated are serious (see www.sleepfoundation.org) affecting your physical/psychological health in the short and long term, your overall quality of life, and the quality of the lives of those near you.

Hope this helps,

Brian
