I know this sounds odd, but I drink anything hot at night and it helps me. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate (yes, I said coffee). I suffer from insomnia and have for many years. My mind races a lot and the coffee actually helps it wind down and relaxes me. I sleep well with it.
Progressive relaxation also helps if my mind will cooperate, but if I can't calm it down, the progressive relaxation doesn't get far.
