Edith:
Just so that you know that you are not alone, I have startled awake, with very similar movements and screams and varying noises. So loud sometimes I've awakened our sleeping son in another room. Mine has increased over the years also. I'm in my early forties, and wonder what role hormones play in it. Because I couldn't get adequate answers, I went to the medical library in our town, and read through all the books on sleep disorders. The term commonly used was hypnic jerks and seemed not to pose any health threat, or be considered a sleep disorder. A good question to ask is if you actually get good rest at night. Ask your doctor, or a neurologist about the jerking. Do you begin dreaming right as you fall asleep? So do these jerks happen because of disruption of your dreams? It is in my case. There are a lot of links on sleep disorders from SleepNet, and I encourage you to see if you have other underlying symptoms, that you have not really noticed before. That may help you decide if you should pursue seeing a neurologist that specializes in such disorders. I do know how frustrating it is and I hope you find some answers.
