Husband can fall asleep but can't stay asleep

My husband had sleep apnea but since his surgery 3 years ago he now breaths freely and does not even snore. His current problem is that he can fall asleep easily but wakes about 1-2 in morning and will be awake for 2 hours before he can fall back asleep. He is miserable - he had been to Dr. and has tried multiple presciptions for sleeping, he has also tried melatonin to no avail. Any suggestions? This has been going on for 8 months.
